Alfons
F.
Vávra
(1901-1957)
was
the
son
of
Jan
Baptista
Vávra,
the
founder
of
the
important
Czech
violin making dynasty.
He
was
apprenticed
to
his
father
from
1915-1919
and
already
became
self-employed
in
1920
in
his
father
's
establishment
in
Banska
Bystrica
(
Slovakia)
.
In
1925
he
returned
to
Prague
and
opened
his
own
shop
.
He
married
in
1927
and
had
three
daughters
Anna
*1928,
Ludmila
*1931,
Marie
*1933
and
a
son
Alfons
*1936.
Ludmila
and
Alfons
were
apprenticed
to
their
father
and
worked
with
him
until
his
death.
Vávra
was
a
very
diligent
maker.
In addition to
repairing
,
he
built
new
instruments,
in
the
early
years
even
guitars,
bass guitars
and
double basses.
He
built
his
violins
and
cellos
after
different
models,
often
those
of
younger
Italian
violin makers.
He
also
built
some
violas
after
the
"Tertis"
model
.
Later
he
mainly
used
models
from
Stradivari
and
Guarneri.
His
varnish
is
soft,
sometimes
less
transparent,
of
golden,
yellow-red
or
even
red
color.
In
1949
he
took
part
in
the
violin making competition
in
The
Hague
and
in
1954
with
great
success
in
a
national
competition.
